Connectivity Built for the Factory Floor, Not the Corporate Tower

Industrial estates are the worst-served addresses in Melbourne and the most dependent on being online. Your ERP, machine monitoring, scanners and dispatch all run through one connection. Summit builds on our own fixed wireless network, so the address that fibre never reached gets a business-grade service in 10 days, with 4G backup underneath it.

The Connectivity Challenge

There's a pattern in Australian manufacturing that nobody planned and everybody lives with: the businesses least well served by telecommunications infrastructure are the ones whose operations now depend on it most.

Manufacturing sits in industrial estates, and industrial estates are where connectivity goes to die. Dandenong South, Campbellfield, Laverton North, Braeside, Hallam: large tenancies, low building density, long distances from exchanges, and almost no commercial case for anyone to run new fibre down the street. So you get whatever copper reached the estate twenty years ago, or an NBN service designed for a suburban house being asked to run a business with forty staff and a warehouse. Quotes for fibre come back with a six-figure build cost because the lead-in doesn't exist, and you're told that's simply what it costs.

Meanwhile everything moved to the cloud. Your ERP is hosted now, whether that's MYOB Advanced, NetSuite, Odoo, SAP Business One or something bespoke. Production scheduling, inventory, purchasing, quoting and invoicing all live in it. When the connection drops, the office cannot raise a purchase order, the warehouse cannot see what to pick, and dispatch cannot generate a consignment note. The machines keep running, which is the cruel part: you continue producing stock that you cannot book, label or ship.

Then there's what's connected to the floor itself. Machine monitoring and OEE dashboards. PLCs that a technician needs to reach remotely instead of driving out. Barcode scanners on the warehouse network. Digital calipers and test rigs feeding quality records. A vendor's remote support session on a CNC machine, which is the difference between a two-hour fix and a two-day wait for someone to fly in. None of this was in the building ten years ago and all of it assumes a connection that stays up.

Large files move constantly too, and in the direction that standard connections handle worst. Customer drawings and revisions come in, but CAD assemblies, CAM toolpaths, nesting files, 3D models for quoting and photographs of non-conformances all go out. On a connection with a fraction of its download speed available for upload, sending a 400 megabyte assembly to a customer takes long enough that people give up and use a USB stick, which is its own problem.

The phones matter more than manufacturers usually admit. Orders arrive by phone. Delivery drivers ring from the gate. Customers chase ETAs, suppliers confirm dispatch, and a production problem generates a dozen calls in an hour. A shared handset in a noisy factory with no way to transfer a call to the right person is a daily operational cost that never appears on a report.

And the sites multiply. A factory in one suburb, a warehouse in another, a small showroom or head office closer to the city. Each on a different connection, each with its own phone number, and no simple way for someone in the office to transfer a caller to the warehouse.

How Summit Helps Manufacturers

  • A Business Connection at an Industrial Address, in 10 Days

This is the problem we were built to solve. Summit's fixed wireless network delivers over the air, which means it does not care whether anyone ever ran fibre down your street. There is no lead-in build, no pit and pipe, no six-figure construction quote and no waiting on a carrier's build queue.

Within our Melbourne coverage footprint we connect a site in 10 days or your first month is free. For a manufacturer who has been told fibre is three months and $80,000, that is usually the entire conversation.

  • 4G Backup, Because a Stopped Line Has an Hourly Cost

Every manufacturer can put a number on an hour of lost production. Almost none can put a number on an hour of lost connectivity, which is odd, because increasingly they are the same hour.

Summit's 4G backup fails over automatically when the primary connection drops. Your ERP stays reachable, scanners keep working, dispatch keeps printing labels and the phones keep ringing. Production keeps being recorded rather than piling up to be reconciled later.

  • Upload Speed That Matches the Direction Your Files Travel

Standard connections are built for households, which download far more than they upload. Manufacturing does the opposite: drawings, models, toolpaths, quality photographs and quoting packages all go out.

Summit's fixed wireless offers symmetrical speed options, where upload matches download. A CAD assembly that took twenty minutes to send takes a couple, and nobody reaches for a USB stick.

  • Secure Remote Access to the Floor, Done Properly

Machine monitoring, PLC access and vendor support sessions all need a way in from outside, and the wrong way to provide it is to expose control systems to the public internet.

We supply static IP addressing so your systems sit at a known address for VPN and remote access, and our MPLS private network service can connect your sites to each other privately, without that traffic crossing the open internet at all. Your IT provider or integrator handles what runs inside the network; we make sure the carriage underneath it is private, addressable and stable. We're happy to talk to them directly rather than through you.

  • A Phone System That Works in a Noisy Building With Two Sites

Summit's cloud phone system gives you extensions across the factory, the warehouse and the office as one system, with calls transferring between buildings as easily as between desks.

    • 1300 numbers: one number for orders and enquiries regardless of which site answers
    • IVR menus: sales, accounts, dispatch, so a caller reaches the right area without going through a receptionist
    • Ring groups: an order enquiry rings several phones so it does not sit unanswered while someone is on the floor
    • Voicemail to email: messages reach the right person even when they were on a forklift
    • After-hours routing: send calls to a mobile or a recorded message outside production hours
  • Every Site on One Account

Factory, warehouse, showroom and head office on one account, one phone system and one bill, with one number to ring when something needs attention. As you add a site or take on more space, it is a variation on an account we already manage rather than a new procurement exercise.

Why Manufacturers Choose Summit

  • 01

We Serve the Addresses Everyone Else Skipped

Our network exists because commercial buildings in Melbourne's industrial and outer suburbs were badly served and nobody was in a hurry to fix it. Manufacturers are the clearest example of that gap. If you have been told your address is too hard or too expensive, that is precisely the conversation to have with us.

  • 02

Our Own Network Means Faults Are Ours to Fix

On fixed wireless we own the infrastructure end to end. When something degrades we are not lodging a ticket with a wholesaler and waiting, and we are not telling you that the other carrier has it. That is also why we can commit to a 10-day connection.

  • 03

We Talk to Your Integrator, Not Around Them

Manufacturing environments have people who know them: an IT provider, a controls integrator, a machine vendor's support team. We handle the carriage, addressing and phone system and deal with those people directly on the technical detail, so you are not relaying messages between vendors who each blame the other.

  • After working with another ISP for several months to deliver a critical internet service for a major international sporting event, we were ultimately advised that the required upgrade was unlikely to be completed prior to event week. This left us facing a significant risk to service delivery. After exhausting all other options (and a few sleepless nights) we came across Summit Internet. From the initial conversation, Allan immediately understood the severity of the situation and quickly engaged his technical delivery team. Michael “Radar” was on site within days to assess and finalise a solution. Despite challenging conditions, including large trees and other obstructions, he worked tirelessly to design and implement an alternative approach. Leveraging an adjacent building, a temporary NBN connection, and a wireless link into the comms room, the solution was delivered within 24 hours of the initial site visit. Not only was the outcome faster than expected, but it was also more cost effective and delivered higher speeds than originally promised by the previous ISP. Over the course of the event, the service handled terabytes of data and supported hundreds of concurrent users without a single speed or performance issue. I cannot thank Summit Internet, particularly Allan and Radar enough for their exceptional service, technical expertise, and commitment to delivering under pressure. Highly recommended.Read more

Frequently asked questions

We were quoted a huge fibre build cost at our industrial address. What are our options?
This is the most common reason manufacturers call us. Because our fixed wireless service is delivered over the air, the cost and time of a fibre lead-in stop being relevant: there is nothing to dig and nothing to build. Within our Melbourne coverage area we connect a site in 10 days or your first month is free. Send us the address and we will tell you straight away whether we reach it.
Can you give us upload speeds that match download?
Yes. Symmetrical speed options are available on our fixed wireless network, which suits manufacturing because your large files travel outbound: CAD assemblies, toolpaths, 3D models and quality photographs. It is the opposite of the profile a consumer connection is built for.
How does 4G backup work with our ERP and scanners?
The backup service sits behind your primary connection and takes over automatically when the primary fails, without anyone doing anything. Cloud ERP, warehouse scanners, dispatch and label printing keep operating over the backup link. It is worth having before your first outage rather than after it.
Can our machine vendor get remote access for support?
Yes, and we will set the carriage up so it can be done sensibly. A static IP gives your network a known address for a VPN, and our MPLS service can carry traffic between your sites privately without crossing the public internet. Exposing a PLC or control system directly to the internet is not something we would recommend, and we will say so; your IT provider or integrator configures what sits behind the connection.
We have a factory in one suburb and a warehouse in another. Can they share a phone system?
Yes. Our hosted phone system spans as many sites as you have, so extensions work across buildings, calls transfer between them, and one 1300 number can route to whichever site should answer. Both sites appear on one bill with one support contact.
Do you cover the wireless network inside our factory?
That's usually your IT provider's work, and factory environments are genuinely specialised: steel racking, concrete, RF noise and long distances all affect coverage inside a shed. We deliver and terminate the service and will be clear about where it lands and what the building needs. We work alongside whoever handles your internal network, and if you don't have anyone we can point you in the right direction.
Is Summit suitable for a small manufacturer with fifteen staff?
Yes. The problems described here are not size-dependent, and a fifteen-person operation with cloud ERP and a warehouse feels an outage just as hard as a large one. We will size the connection and the phone system to the business you actually are, including telling you when the cheaper option is the right one.
