Your Team Already Lives in Teams. Give It a Real Phone Line.

Summit connects Microsoft Teams to the public phone network over our own voice infrastructure. Keep the app your staff already use every day, add proper business calling behind it, and deal with one Australian carrier who answers the phone.

Overview

Most Australian businesses have already standardised on Microsoft Teams. Staff meet in it, chat in it and share files in it. Then they pick up a completely separate desk phone to call a customer, on a completely separate bill, from a completely different provider.

Microsoft Teams Phone closes that gap by adding calling to the app your staff already have open. What it does not include is the connection to the public phone network. That part needs a carrier, and Microsoft gives you a choice about who provides it. You can buy calling minutes from Microsoft, or you can bring your own carrier through a method Microsoft calls Direct Routing.

Summit is that carrier. We are an ACMA licensed carrier, we build, own, operate and maintain our own voice network, and we connect it to your Microsoft tenant so calls to and from your business numbers ride our infrastructure rather than being handed around between third parties. Your staff dial from Teams exactly as they do now. Behind the scenes, the call is on a network we control and can actually fix.

Key Benefits

  • One App Instead of Two

Staff make and take business calls in the Teams client they already have open on their desktop and phone. There is no second application to install, no second directory to maintain and no training required, because the interface is the one they use all day.

  • Australian Numbers on an Australian Carrier

We port your existing numbers or issue new ones, including local numbers in every capital city and 1300 or 1800 inbound numbers. Your calls are carried by an Australian licensed carrier, not routed offshore and back.

  • Usually Cheaper Than Buying Minutes From Microsoft

Microsoft sells calling plans on a per user, per month basis whether that user makes two calls a month or two hundred. Bringing your own carrier lets you pay for the call capacity your business actually uses, which for most businesses with a mix of heavy and light phone users costs less.

  • Calls Prioritised on Our Own Network

When your internet is also from Summit, we apply quality of service to your voice traffic across our network so calls are not fighting a large file upload for bandwidth. No other Teams calling provider can do that, because they do not own the connection.

  • Emergency Calling Handled Properly

As a licensed carrier we carry the regulatory obligations for emergency calling. Calls to 000 from your Teams users are routed correctly with the registered service address, which is a genuine compliance requirement and not something to leave to chance.

  • Keep Your Existing Handsets Where You Want Them

Reception desks, warehouses and meeting rooms often still need a physical phone. Teams certified desk phones and conference phones work alongside the software clients, so you are not forced to put every user on a headset.

  • One Provider, One Bill

Internet, voice, mobile and your Teams calling on a single account with a single Melbourne based support team. When something goes wrong there is nobody to hand you off to.

  • Works Alongside a Traditional Phone System

Teams calling does not have to be all or nothing. Some businesses run Teams for office staff and keep a full phone system for a contact centre or a shopfront. We can connect both to the same numbers and the same carrier.

How It Works

  1. 1 We review your Microsoft licensing

Teams calling requires a Microsoft licence that includes Teams Phone. We check what your tenant already has, tell you plainly whether you need to add anything, and never sell you Microsoft licensing you do not need.

  2. 2 We connect our voice network to your tenant

Summit provisions the carrier side and establishes the connection between our voice network and your Microsoft tenant. This is the part most providers make sound complicated. For you it is a form and a scheduled cutover window.

  3. 3 We port your numbers

Your existing business numbers move across to Summit. Porting is scheduled, tested and reversible, and your old service stays live until the new one is confirmed working.

  4. 4 You build your call flows, with help if you want it

Auto attendants, call queues, ring groups, business hours routing and voicemail all live in your Microsoft tenant, so you or your IT partner configure them and keep control of them. We will walk you through it, sanity-check the design and tell you what works well in practice. If you would rather somebody else owned that layer, a hosted phone system is the better fit and we will say so.

  5. 5 You go live and we stay on the phone

Calls start flowing through Teams. Your staff notice a dial pad and their existing numbers. You have an Australian support team who already know your setup.

Use Cases

  • Professional Services

    One Identity, Two Locations

A 40 person law firm has staff splitting time between the office and home. Client calls need to reach the responsible solicitor wherever they are, and reception needs to transfer confidently. Teams calling gives every solicitor one number that follows them across desktop and mobile, with reception transferring from the same app they already use for chat.

    Lawyers & Accountants
  • Multi Site Business

Numbers Where the Customers Expect Them

A business with branches in three states wants each branch to advertise a local number, while the back office team answers overflow centrally. Summit provides local numbers in each state, all landing in Teams call queues, so a caller reaches a local number and a real person without the business staffing three reception desks.

    Marketing & Media
  • Growing Team

    Adding Staff Without Adding Hardware

A 25 person business is hiring quickly and does not want to buy a handset for every new starter. New staff get a Teams client and a number on their first day, configured remotely, with no site visit and no cabling.

    Hospitality & Tourism
  • Existing Microsoft Investment: Getting Value From What You Already Pay For

A business already paying for Microsoft licensing discovers it includes most of what it needs for calling. Rather than renewing a separate phone system contract, they keep Teams, add Summit as the carrier, and reduce the number of vendors on the bill.

  • Reception and Shopfront

    Software Plus a Real Handset

A medical practice needs a physical phone at the front desk that anyone can pick up, plus mobile access for practice managers. Teams certified handsets sit on the desk while managers use the mobile client, all on the same numbers and the same call flows.

    Dentists & GPs
  • Field and Site Staff

    One Number, Wherever They Are

A building services company has estimators and supervisors on site most of the day. Calls to the office number need to reach whoever is covering, and staff calling a client from a job site should present the business number rather than a personal mobile. Teams calling puts the business number on their phone, with call queues covering the office line so nothing rings out to voicemail.

Why Choose Summit for Microsoft Teams Calling

  • 01

We Are the Carrier, Not a Reseller of One

Most providers offering Teams calling in Australia are reselling somebody else's network. We hold ACMA Carrier Licence #388 and operate our own voice infrastructure with points of presence in NEXTDC data centres. When there is a problem with a call, we are looking at our own network rather than lodging a ticket with a wholesaler.

  • 02

The Only Provider Who Can Prioritise Your Calls End to End

Voice quality problems are almost always a network problem, not a Teams problem. Because we can supply the internet connection as well as the calling, we apply quality of service across the whole path. A provider who only sells you the calling side has no ability to do that.

  • 03

Australian Support Who Know Microsoft and Telco

Teams calling sits exactly on the line between IT and telecommunications, which is why it so often ends in two vendors blaming each other. We handle both sides. When you call 1300 049 749 you reach a Melbourne team who can look at the carrier configuration and the Teams configuration together.

  • 04

Honest Advice About Whether You Need It

Teams calling is a good fit for a lot of businesses and a poor fit for some. If you run a busy contact centre with heavy queue reporting requirements, we will tell you a dedicated phone system suits you better and point you at Hosted PBX instead. We would rather sell you the right thing.

  • After working with another ISP for several months to deliver a critical internet service for a major international sporting event, we were ultimately advised that the required upgrade was unlikely to be completed prior to event week. This left us facing a significant risk to service delivery. After exhausting all other options (and a few sleepless nights) we came across Summit Internet. From the initial conversation, Allan immediately understood the severity of the situation and quickly engaged his technical delivery team. Michael “Radar” was on site within days to assess and finalise a solution. Despite challenging conditions, including large trees and other obstructions, he worked tirelessly to design and implement an alternative approach. Leveraging an adjacent building, a temporary NBN connection, and a wireless link into the comms room, the solution was delivered within 24 hours of the initial site visit. Not only was the outcome faster than expected, but it was also more cost effective and delivered higher speeds than originally promised by the previous ISP. Over the course of the event, the service handled terabytes of data and supported hundreds of concurrent users without a single speed or performance issue. I cannot thank Summit Internet, particularly Allan and Radar enough for their exceptional service, technical expertise, and commitment to delivering under pressure. Highly recommended.Read more

Frequently asked questions

What do I need from Microsoft to use Teams calling?
You need Microsoft licensing that includes Teams Phone. Some Microsoft business and enterprise plans include it, others need it added. We check your tenant before quoting anything and tell you exactly what is required. We do not resell Microsoft licensing, so we have no incentive to tell you to buy more of it than you need.
How is this different from buying a calling plan from Microsoft?
A Microsoft calling plan bundles the carriage with your licence at a fixed price per user per month. Bringing your own carrier means Summit provides the connection to the phone network instead, so you pay for call capacity rather than per head. For most businesses with a mix of heavy and occasional phone users this works out cheaper, and it means your carrier is an Australian company you can telephone.
Can I keep my existing phone numbers?
Yes. We port your existing numbers across from your current provider, including local numbers and 1300 or 1800 inbound numbers. Porting is scheduled with you, and your existing service stays active until the port is confirmed working, so there is no window where customers cannot reach you.
What happens to calls if our internet goes down?
Teams calling depends on your internet connection, which is why we usually recommend pairing it with a backup path. Our 4G Backup service fails your connection over to the mobile network automatically so calls keep working. You can also configure your call flows to divert to mobile numbers if a site goes offline entirely.
Do we have to give everyone a headset?
No. Teams certified desk phones and conference phones work as native Teams endpoints, so reception desks, meeting rooms, warehouses and shopfronts can keep a physical handset while other staff use the software client. Most of our customers run a mix.
Does emergency calling work properly?
Yes, and this is worth asking every provider you talk to. As a licensed carrier we carry the regulatory obligation for emergency calling. Calls to 000 are routed with the registered service address for that user, and we will walk you through keeping those addresses current as staff move around.
Can we run Teams calling and a traditional phone system at the same time?
Yes. Plenty of businesses put office and mobile staff on Teams while keeping a full phone system for a contact centre, a shopfront or a reception team that needs deeper queue features. We can connect both to the same carrier and the same numbers, so customers see one business.
How long does it take to set up?
For a straightforward business with existing Microsoft licensing, the carrier connection and call flow build typically takes a week or two. The timeline is usually set by number porting rather than by us, since porting depends on your current provider. We give you a date and keep you posted.
Will call quality be as good as a desk phone on a traditional system?
On a properly provisioned connection, yes. Voice quality issues with Teams almost always come down to the network rather than the software. That is the specific reason we recommend taking the internet connection from us as well, so we can prioritise voice traffic across the path instead of hoping for the best on somebody else's network.
Do you support Copilot and AI call summaries?
Those features come from your Microsoft licensing rather than from us, so whether you have them depends on which Microsoft plan you are on. They work the same way with Summit as your carrier as they would with any other. Ask us and we will tell you what your current licensing includes.
