Overview

Machine-to-machine connectivity is the least glamorous part of a telco's product set and the one most often sold badly.

The mismatch is simple. A consumer or staff mobile plan is built around a person: a monthly allowance, a handset, someone who notices when it stops working and rings support. An IoT deployment is the opposite. A water level sensor might send a few kilobytes a day for eight years. A GPS tracker in a trailer reports a position every few minutes. A vending machine wakes up to process a card payment and goes quiet. An irrigation controller checks in twice a day. Nobody is standing next to any of them.

That difference has real consequences. Buying a per-device allowance for two hundred devices that each use almost nothing is enormously wasteful, but a single device that develops a fault and starts retrying can quietly consume a lot of data before anyone notices. Devices are installed in the places coverage is worst, and they are expected to keep working for years after whoever specified them has moved on.

Summit's Mobile IoT service is data SIMs for unattended devices, on Australia's biggest mobile network, with data pooled across the deployment so you buy for aggregate consumption rather than per device.     An IoT device outlives most business decisions. Its connectivity needs to still be working, still be understood and still be on a sensible plan in five years, when the person who chose it has moved on and the only documentation is a label on the enclosure.

    Plenty of deployments need traffic to go the other way: a controller you need to configure, a camera you need to view, a terminal that needs to be reached for support. That requires a known address rather than whatever the network hands out.

    We provide static IP addressing where a device needs to be reachable, and for deployments where device traffic should not touch the public internet at all, our MPLS private network service can carry it privately back to your systems.     Device type, how often each one reports, roughly how much data it sends, how many you are deploying and where. Rough numbers are fine at this stage.

  2. 2 We size the pool and check coverage

    We size the shared data pool on aggregate usage with headroom, and for larger deployments we check coverage against a sample of your real locations rather than a map.

  3. 3 We provision and ship

    SIMs arrive ready to activate, or eSIM profiles for supported devices. Where devices need to be reachable inbound, static IP addressing is configured at this point.

  4. 4 We keep the deployment on one account

    New devices are added to the existing pool as you roll out, on the same bill as your other Summit services.

How is this different from mobile broadband?
Mobile Broadband is data-only SIMs aimed at devices a person uses: tablets, laptops and mobile hotspots. Mobile IoT is aimed at unattended devices in larger numbers, each using very little, where the plan structure needs to be pooled across the deployment rather than allocated per device. If a person carries it, mobile broadband is usually the fit; if it sits in an enclosure, this is.
How much data does an IoT device actually use?
It varies enormously by device class. A sensor sending a small reading a few times a day may use single-digit megabytes a month. A tracker reporting every few minutes uses more. A digital sign pulling content is heavier again, and a camera is in a different category entirely. Tell us the device type and reporting interval and we will do the sizing; guessing is what leads to either waste or excess.
Can we add devices as we roll out?
Yes, and that is the normal pattern. Devices are added to the existing pool rather than each one arriving with its own plan, so a rollout in stages does not mean renegotiating anything.
Can we reach our devices remotely?
Yes, with the right addressing. A static IP gives a device a known address so it can be reached inbound for configuration, support or monitoring. Where device traffic should not cross the public internet at all, our MPLS private network service can carry it privately to your systems. Which one you need depends on what has to reach what, so tell us and we will recommend rather than upsell.
What if a device faults and starts consuming a lot of data?
It happens, usually a device stuck in a retry loop, and on a pooled plan the risk is that one device eats into the shared allowance. Talk to us about the deployment and we will discuss how to structure it sensibly, including where it is worth separating a class of device out of the main pool.
Our devices are in poor coverage areas. Can you help?
Sometimes, and we would rather find out with a test than a promise. Your SIMs run on Australia's biggest mobile network at 98.8% population coverage, which is the best available starting point, but a specific pump station in a valley is a question no coverage map answers honestly. For a deployment of any size we would check a sample of your actual sites first.
Do you support eSIM in embedded hardware?
Yes, on supported devices. For sealed enclosures or hardware where a SIM tray is impractical, eSIM means provisioning without physical access, which matters when the alternative is sending someone to a remote site.
We build a product that includes connectivity. Can you supply the SIMs?
That is a common arrangement, and worth talking through properly because it affects how the service is structured, how it is billed and what happens when you sell a unit to a customer. Tell us what your product does and how you want to bill for it, and we will work out whether we are the right fit.
Can IoT SIMs sit on the same account as our staff mobiles?
Yes. Device SIMs, staff mobiles, office internet and voice all sit on one Summit account and one bill. Where a business has both a staff fleet and a device fleet, we would usually structure the data pools separately, because the two behave nothing alike, while keeping the account and the billing together.
