Who We Help

Voice, Data and Mobile for Homes That Never Close

Summit is a telecommunications carrier: we do the voice, the data and the mobile. In aged care that means connections built for continuous operation with automatic backup underneath them, resident and family wifi kept separate from your clinical systems, phones that reach the on-call nurse at 2am, and mobile for your home care teams. Every home and the community program on one account.

What We Do, and What We Leave to Specialists

Summit provides telecommunications: voice, data and mobile. That is the whole of what we sell, and it is worth stating plainly on a page like this, because aged care is full of specialised systems that a telco has no business claiming.

Nurse call is the obvious one. It is a highly specialised field with its own vendors, its own standards and its own engineering, and we do not supply, configure or support it. The same goes for your clinical software and the network inside the building, which belong to your clinical software vendor and your IT provider.

What we do is provide the carriage and the communications those systems sit on top of, and specify it for what it is actually carrying rather than selling you an office connection. When your nurse call vendor or IT provider needs something from the network, we deal with them directly rather than through you.

So the split is simple. They own the systems. We own the voice, the data and the mobile, and we make sure that part is never the reason something did not work.

The Connectivity Challenge

Something changed in aged care over the last decade that hasn't been fully reckoned with: the connection stopped being an office service and became part of how care gets delivered.

The clinical systems moved to the cloud. Care plans, progress notes, clinical assessments, medication charts and incident records in systems like Leecare, AutumnCare, Manad or Person Centred Software. Electronic medication management, where a nurse signs for a dose against a chart on a tablet. Wound imaging, falls and behaviour monitoring, sensor mats and door monitoring in a memory support unit. When the connection drops, staff fall back to paper, and reconciling a shift of paper notes into the system afterwards is both a workload and a clinical risk.

Plenty of specialised equipment now expects a working network too, from monitoring to door systems to the call system itself. Those are somebody else's to supply and support. The relevant point for us is that the connection underneath them stopped being something you can buy like an office service.

Then there's the reporting. Aged care is one of the most heavily reported sectors in the country. Care minutes, quality indicators, the quarterly financial report, AN-ACC assessments and Star Ratings all depend on data being captured accurately at the point of care and submitted by a fixed date. Those deadlines don't move because your internet was down for a day, and a home whose reported care minutes are wrong because a shift went unrecorded has a problem that surfaces months later in a rating.

Telehealth is now routine rather than an experiment. GPs, geriatricians, psychiatrists, wound specialists and allied health all consult into homes by video, because moving a frail resident to an appointment is worse for them and more expensive for everyone. A consultation that stutters and drops is a clinical appointment wasted, and the next available slot might be a fortnight away.

Family connectivity became non-negotiable during the pandemic and never went back. Residents and their families expect video calls, and residents increasingly arrive with their own devices, subscriptions and expectations. A home where the wifi is poor in the rooms hears about it from families and from prospective residents comparing homes. But that traffic, dozens of people streaming and video calling, is sitting on the same infrastructure as your clinical systems in far too many homes. That is both a performance problem and a risk that no one should be comfortable with.

The buildings themselves are difficult. Aged care homes are large, often built in stages across decades, with thick walls, long corridors, wings added later and a memory support unit that was a conversion. Coverage inside them is a genuine engineering problem, and many are in outer suburban or regional locations where the available connectivity was never good.

And it runs continuously. There is no closing time, no quiet period and no window when a service interruption is convenient. Night shift is when staffing is thinnest and when a family member is most likely to ring about a deteriorating resident. The people who need to be reachable after hours, the on-call registered nurse, the clinical manager, the after-hours GP service, change with the roster.

Most providers also run more than one home, frequently alongside a home care or community program, which means all of the above repeated across sites with different buildings, different connections and different histories.

How Summit Helps Aged Care Providers

  • A Connection Specified for What It Actually Carries

When clinical records, medication charts, telehealth and the phones all depend on one connection in a building that never closes, that connection needs specifying rather than ordering. A business-grade service, automatic backup underneath it, capacity sized for everything running at once on a Saturday night, and a support path you can escalate.

What we will not do is sell a home a consumer-grade connection and let you find out the difference during a night shift.

  • 4G Backup, Because a Home Never Closes

Aged care has no version of "we'll deal with it tomorrow". Care continues, medications are due, families ring and the reporting deadline stands.

Summit's 4G backup fails over automatically when the primary connection drops. Clinical systems, electronic medication management, telehealth, the phones and the office stay working, without anyone on a night shift having to diagnose a router. On a site where the alternative is a shift reverting to paper, this is the least expensive useful thing you can add.

  • Resident and Family Wifi, Kept Away From Clinical Systems

Residents and families should have good wifi. It should have nothing to do with the network carrying your clinical systems.

We provide the connection, the addressing and, where it helps, private connectivity between sites, so resident and guest traffic can be properly separated from clinical traffic and prevented from competing with it for bandwidth. The configuration inside the building is your IT provider's work, and we will talk to them about it directly. If nobody currently owns that separation, we will tell you plainly that it is worth paying to have done once.

  • After-Hours Routing to Whoever Is Actually On Call

Summit's cloud phone system routes calls by time of day and escalates them, so the person who should answer at 2am does, without anybody remembering to set a diversion at the end of the day.

    • Time-based routing: business-hours calls to reception, after-hours calls to the on-call registered nurse or clinical manager
    • Ring groups: an urgent call rings several phones at once, so a missed call requires several people to miss it
    • Escalation: an unanswered call moves to the next person automatically rather than going to voicemail
    • A single 1300 number: one number for families across every home, routing by time of day and by site
    • Voicemail to email: a message from a family overnight reaches the right person, timestamped
    • Call recording: available where you need a record of what a family was told and when, which matters when a complaint is reviewed later

Changing who is on call becomes a roster change rather than an IT task.

  • Every Home and the Community Program on One Account

Homes, head office and a home care or community program on one account, one phone system and one bill, with one number to ring. Calls transfer between sites, a single number can route by location, and a new home is a variation on an account we already manage.

Our MPLS private network service can connect your homes privately, so clinical data moving between a site and head office never crosses the public internet.

  • Mobile for Home Care and Community Teams

Home care workers, community nurses and allied health staff spend their day in other people's houses. Summit's business mobile SIM plans run on a national network reaching 98.8% of the Australian population, covering the suburban and regional spread those teams work across. On your account, so a departing worker's SIM is yours to reassign, and the cost sits with your other services.

  • Difficult Buildings, Addressed Honestly

Large homes built in stages are hard to cover well, and outer suburban and regional sites often have poor options at the address. Within our Melbourne fixed wireless footprint we deliver over the air with no lead-in build, live in 10 days or your first month is free, which suits older buildings where fibre never arrived. Outside it we will tell you straight what is achievable, which is usually business NBN with 4G underneath it rather than something that sounds better.

Why Aged Care Providers Choose Summit

  • 01

We Treat the Connection as Part of Care Delivery

In a home, an outage is a clinical event rather than an inconvenience, because the systems staff are working from stop being available. That changes what we recommend: backup by default rather than as an upsell, resident traffic separated from clinical traffic, and a specification based on everything running at once on a Saturday night rather than on an average.

  • 02

We Design Around a Roster, Not Around Office Hours

Most phone systems are sold to businesses that close. The features that matter in a home are the ones that work when the office is empty: time-based routing, escalation between on-call phones, and voicemail that reaches the right person overnight. That is where we start.

  • 03

    One Provider Across Every Home

Internet, phones, after-hours routing, numbers and mobiles from Summit on one bill with one number to ring. For a provider whose administration is stretched and whose margins are set by funding rather than by what you charge, removing several vendor relationships is worth real money and real time.

  • 04

We Stay in Our Lane, and Work With the Specialists in Theirs

We sell voice, data and mobile. Nurse call is a specialised field and we do not pretend otherwise, any more than we pretend to be your IT department or your clinical software vendor. We handle carriage, addressing, private links and the phone system, and we deal with your other providers directly on the technical detail so you are not relaying messages between vendors who each blame the other.

An Independent Australian Carrier Since 2000

Summit has been an independent Australian carrier since August 2000, holding ACMA Carrier Licence #388. On fixed wireless we own the network, so a fault is ours to fix. When you ring, you reach our own team and you can escalate.

  • After working with another ISP for several months to deliver a critical internet service for a major international sporting event, we were ultimately advised that the required upgrade was unlikely to be completed prior to event week. This left us facing a significant risk to service delivery. After exhausting all other options (and a few sleepless nights) we came across Summit Internet. From the initial conversation, Allan immediately understood the severity of the situation and quickly engaged his technical delivery team. Michael “Radar” was on site within days to assess and finalise a solution. Despite challenging conditions, including large trees and other obstructions, he worked tirelessly to design and implement an alternative approach. Leveraging an adjacent building, a temporary NBN connection, and a wireless link into the comms room, the solution was delivered within 24 hours of the initial site visit. Not only was the outcome faster than expected, but it was also more cost effective and delivered higher speeds than originally promised by the previous ISP. Over the course of the event, the service handled terabytes of data and supported hundreds of concurrent users without a single speed or performance issue. I cannot thank Summit Internet, particularly Allan and Radar enough for their exceptional service, technical expertise, and commitment to delivering under pressure. Highly recommended.Read more

Frequently asked questions

Do you supply nurse call systems?
No. Nurse call is a highly specialised field with its own vendors, standards and engineering, and it is not something a telco should be selling you. We provide telecommunications: voice, data and mobile.
Our nurse call system is moving onto the network. What does that change for you?
It raises the standard the connection has to meet, which is our part of it. In practice that means a business-grade service rather than a consumer one, automatic backup as a default rather than an option, resident and guest traffic separated from clinical traffic, and capacity sized for everything running at once. Your nurse call vendor specifies and supports the system; we make sure the carriage underneath it is right, and we will talk to them directly about what the network needs to do.
Can resident and family wifi be kept separate from clinical systems?
Yes, and it should be. Dozens of people streaming and video calling on the same infrastructure as your clinical systems is both a performance problem and a risk. We provide the connection and addressing that makes proper separation possible, and can link your sites privately. The configuration inside the building is your IT provider's work and we will deal with them on it. If nobody owns that today, this is the part worth paying to have done properly once.
What happens to clinical records and medication charts if the internet drops?
4G backup takes over automatically, so cloud clinical software, electronic medication management, telehealth and the phones keep working over the backup link. The point is that a shift never has to fall back to paper, because reconciling a shift of paper notes afterwards is both a workload and a clinical risk.
Can you route after-hours calls to whoever is on call tonight?
Yes, and it is one of the most useful things we do for providers running 24-hour services. Calls route by time of day, ring several phones at once, and escalate to the next person if unanswered. Nobody has to set a diversion at the end of the day, which is the step that gets missed. Updating who is on call is a change in the system rather than a job for whoever locks up.
Does using Summit help with the Aged Care Quality Standards?
It supports them; it does not discharge them. Your obligations around care, clinical governance, records and continuity sit with you and with your clinical leadership, and no telco can take them on. What we provide is the infrastructure some of those obligations rest on: connectivity built for continuous operation, automatic backup so records and systems stay available, private connectivity between sites, and call recording where you need a record of what a family was told. If your auditor or assessor asks, we are happy to document how your services are configured.
We run four homes and a home care program. Can they all be on one account?
Yes, and consolidating is usually the biggest single improvement we make. Every home, head office and the community program on one account, one phone system and one bill. Calls transfer between homes, one number can route by site and by time of day, and clinical data can move between sites over a private network rather than the public internet.
Our home is a large building added to over the years. Coverage inside is poor. Can you fix it?
The in-building coverage is your IT provider's domain, and in a home built in stages with thick walls and long corridors it is genuinely specialised work. What we do is deliver a connection that is not the limiting factor, tell you clearly where it lands and what the building will need, and work alongside whoever handles your internal network. If you do not have anyone doing that well, we will say so, because a good connection into a building with poor internal coverage does not solve your problem.
We are in a regional area and the options here are poor. What can you do?
We will be straight with you. Our fixed wireless network covers Melbourne, so at a regional address we are looking at business NBN where it is reasonable, a 4G service where it is not, and often both together so a weak primary has backup underneath it. Send us the address and we will tell you what is genuinely achievable rather than overpromising to win the job.
Is telehealth going to work reliably for GP and specialist consults?
That is largely a question of specification and backup. We size the connection for concurrent video alongside everything else the home runs, and prioritise voice and video on our own network where we provide fixed wireless, so a large upload starting mid-consultation does not degrade the call. Where the clinician's end is the constraint we will tell you that rather than let you keep chasing it.
We are a single-site not-for-profit home. Are we too small for Summit?
No. A single home still runs clinical software, telehealth, resident wifi, specialised equipment and a 24-hour roster, so the requirements are the same shape as a large provider's, just smaller. We will size and quote for the home you actually are, including telling you when the cheaper option is the right one.
