Overview

BarNet was established in 1999 by a small group of barristers and is operated by BarNetwork Pty Limited, a not-for-profit corporation based in Sydney. It provides internet and network services to barristers and associated legal professionals, including gigabit fibre internet to BarNet connected chambers, managed internet, and hosting services such as website, virtual server, email and domain hosting.

There are plenty of ordinary reasons a chambers or legal practice might review its internet provider: a contract coming to an end, a move to new premises that are not on the same network, a wish to have internet and phones from the one carrier, or simply wanting to compare what else is available for a business connection.

Summit Internet has served Australian businesses for 26 years and sells only to businesses. We build, own and operate our own network, with Points of Presence in NEXTDC data centres and DDoS protection as standard. We offer business nbn with a static IP included, Ethernet over fibre, 4G Backup and business phone services, all on one bill.

Summit Internet is an independent carrier and is not affiliated with BarNet or BarNetwork Pty Limited.

How Summit Helps

  • Business nbn with a static IP included

Our business nbn plans include a static IP, which is useful for remote access, document management systems and secure connections to practice software. On full-fibre nbn, speeds go up to 2000/500 Mbps.

  • Ethernet over fibre for larger chambers

Where a floor or a building of practitioners shares one connection, Ethernet over fibre is another option to consider. We will look at your address and tell you what is available.

  • Our own network, with DDoS protection as standard

Summit builds, owns and operates its own network, with Points of Presence in NEXTDC data centres. DDoS protection is included as standard on our services.

  • 4G Backup so a dropped link does not stop the day

4G Backup fails over automatically to Australia's biggest mobile network, with 98.8% population coverage, and fails back automatically when your main connection returns. Useful when filings, video hearings and client calls cannot wait.

  • Phones from the same carrier

Move your phones as well if it suits you. Our Hosted PBX cloud phone system starts from $10 per user per month with every feature included, or keep your existing phone system and connect it with SIP trunks. When your internet is also Summit's, voice traffic is prioritised.

  • Microsoft Teams Calling

If your chambers already works in Microsoft Teams, we can connect Teams to the phone network through Direct Routing. We do not resell Microsoft licences, so you keep the licensing you have.

  • One bill for internet, phones and mobile

Internet, phones and business mobile SIM plans can all sit on one Summit bill, which keeps administration simple for clerks and practice managers.

  • Switch only what you want to switch

If you also use other services such as hosting or email, you can move just your internet connection and leave everything else as it is. We will quote on what you ask for.

How It Works

  1. 1 Tell us what you have

Share your address, the services you use today and when your current agreement ends. If you are moving chambers, give us the new address and your move date.

  2. 2 We check your options

We look at business nbn, Ethernet over fibre and 4G Backup at your address and recommend what fits the number of people and devices you have.

  3. 3 You get a written quote

One clear proposal for internet and, if you want them, phones and mobiles. Ask as many questions as you like before you sign.

  4. 4 We schedule the install

We plan the new service to go live before your old one is cancelled, so your practice stays online during the changeover.

  5. 5 Cancel the old service once you are live

When the Summit connection is up and tested, you arrange cancellation of your previous service in line with your agreement.

  • After working with another ISP for several months to deliver a critical internet service for a major international sporting event, we were ultimately advised that the required upgrade was unlikely to be completed prior to event week. This left us facing a significant risk to service delivery. After exhausting all other options (and a few sleepless nights) we came across Summit Internet. From the initial conversation, Allan immediately understood the severity of the situation and quickly engaged his technical delivery team. Michael “Radar” was on site within days to assess and finalise a solution. Despite challenging conditions, including large trees and other obstructions, he worked tirelessly to design and implement an alternative approach. Leveraging an adjacent building, a temporary NBN connection, and a wireless link into the comms room, the solution was delivered within 24 hours of the initial site visit. Not only was the outcome faster than expected, but it was also more cost effective and delivered higher speeds than originally promised by the previous ISP. Over the course of the event, the service handled terabytes of data and supported hundreds of concurrent users without a single speed or performance issue. I cannot thank Summit Internet, particularly Allan and Radar enough for their exceptional service, technical expertise, and commitment to delivering under pressure. Highly recommended.Read more

  • Summit internet recently set my small business up with a local land line number and a soft phone that runs off an app on my mobile - getting my personal phone number off the internet and being able to distinguish between business and personal calls is a game changer. Whole process took less than a week, and is super cost effective. Highly recommend.Read more

Frequently asked questions

Is Summit Internet part of BarNet?
No. Summit Internet is an independent Australian carrier holding ACMA Carrier Licence #388. We are not affiliated with BarNet or BarNetwork Pty Limited, and this page is simply for BarNet customers who are comparing their options.
Why switch if my BarNet service is working?
If your current service does everything your chambers needs, there may be no reason to change. Businesses usually review their provider when a contract is ending, when they move premises, or when they want internet and phones from one carrier. If any of those apply, it is worth getting a quote to compare.
Will I have to pay to break my contract?
That depends on the terms of your agreement with your current provider. Check your contract for any minimum term or exit fees. The simplest approach is to time your switch to your contract end date, and we can plan the install around that.
Can I switch if I am moving to new chambers?
Yes. A move is a good time to review your provider. Give us the new address and your move date and we will check what is available there and aim to have the service ready when you arrive.
Do I need to move my hosting or email to Summit?
No. You can switch your internet connection on its own and keep your website, email and other services where they are.
Is a static IP included?
Yes. A static IP is included with Summit business nbn.
What happens if my internet connection drops?
With 4G Backup, your connection fails over automatically to Australia's biggest mobile network and fails back automatically when the main link is restored.
Can I keep my phone numbers if I move my phones as well?
Yes, existing numbers can be ported to Summit. Keep your current phone service active until the port is complete, because only active numbers can be ported. The ACMA says single local numbers generally port in 8 to 15 days, and multi-number ports can take up to 30 days.
Is Summit's fixed wireless available to my chambers?
Summit's fixed wireless network covers Melbourne and regional Victoria only. If your chambers is in that area, you can check your coverage. Outside it, we offer business nbn and Ethernet over fibre.
